Shopping Areas in Gurgaon
The Primary shopping area in Gurgaon is the M.G. Road, which is considered to be the shopping district of Gurgaon. This road is about a couple of Kilometers long and is actually called the Mehrauli-Gurgaon Road, short form (M.G. Road). It is quite surprising that most cities in India have M.G. Road as the primary road. That ofcourse is because of the fact that M.G. also stands for Mahatma Gandhi and a lot of roads are named after him.
Shopping in Gurgaon has evolved over the past few years and in fact, surprisingly though, but Gurgaon got the malls before New Delhi did. The reason is evident, Gurgaon was more proactive towards developers in Gurgaon. Privatisation in the Construction and Development sector happened much sooner than New Delhi, where New Delhi was still caught up in the Red Tapism, Gurgaon took the bigger leap. So much so that till the time the New Delhi malls came up, Delhi buyers were seen shopping at Gurgaon Malls. This ofcourse gave the innitial boost to shop owners in Gurgaon.
Currently the most happening mall is considered to be the MGF Metropolitan Mall. The primary reason for it's success was the planning. While the other developers were experimenting with wierd designs, MGF put in a lot of research to find the right Rectangular Design and it worked well. Also for the fact that it was one of the first to come up in Gurgaon added to its success.
The second mall that does well is the City Center by Dlf Group. The sucess of this one is primarily attributed to the Lifestyle Store which came in as the Anchor store here. At lifestyle you could possibly get a large variety of stuff, like Kids Stuff to Furniture to Clothes to Shoes etc. If you are moving to Gurgaon, this may be a good place to visit for initial shopping till the time you get familiarised with the city and find your own niche places to shop.
So, M.G. Road today has about 7 or 8 malls, including one Stand Alone Departmental Store called the Gurgaon Central. This came in much later, located right next to MGF Metropolitan Mall. This found its niche as there is no other Stand Alone Departmental Store in Gurgaon.
Apart from the M.G. Road, We have the Largest(presently the largest) Mall in Gurgaon called the Ambi Mall, This is almost a Kilometer long mall, with brands like Debanhams, Marks and Spensors, PVR Cinemas, PVR Gold, KFC, Pizza Hut, Costa Coffee, Arrow, Reliance Digital etc. This one is located right at the entrance of Gurgaon, when you are coming from Delhi via the National Highway 8, located just after you cross the toll bridge. This one has possibly the most crowd today, consdering the size of the place, the reason would possibly be availability of everything under one roof. There are some interesting stores like the music stores selling instruments and some large format stores like the Reliance Digital, which hosts all possible electronics and electricals. Also an interesting store in the parking lot, which has every thing to do with automobile accesories, tyres, etc. So you can actually, park your car, ask them to do whatever you need to get done in your car while you enjoy shopping in the mall. |
